University of Michigan
Law School & Library Building
Ann Arbor, MI

LORING provided the design of the new Law Library. The new Law
Library has addressed itself successfully to three major design
problems: integration within a highly developed existing facility;
control and use of day lighting; and energy conservation. The design
solution, which dictated that the 77,500 sf building be located
below grade with a sloping glass facade facing the existing Law
Library, has yielded a building envelope with excellent energy
characteristics. Calculations have projected a 20% savings in energy
compared to a similar building constructed above grade with ”U”
factors meeting the ASHRAE 90-75 criteria (Uo= .27).
