Senior Mechanical Designer (TO-SM-01)

Role
Loring is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer for our Toronto office. This position requires sound knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals, contract management experience, experience managing project scope, document preparation and a solid understanding of technical specifications.
Primary Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Design HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and control plans, including all associated details, risers, schematics, and specifications.
  • Perform system design calculations, heating and cooling load calculations, air-side, and water-side pressure drop calculations, and any other calculations required to support mechanical designs.
  • Participate in field engineering assignments.
  • Develop data analytics tools for engineering projects.
  • Review vendor drawings to ensure conformity with engineering designs.
  • Coordinate with other professional disciplines (architectural, civil, electrical, structural, etc.) to ensure the accuracy of design, and the timely flow of information throughout the project.
  • Develop and recommend improvements in design standards and improve work quality.
  • Write reports and prepare specifications (both book and drawing format).
  • Attend meetings and communicate with clients to establish their design goals/needs and discuss design issues with them.
  • Participate in contract administration, including technical review of RFIs and shop drawings, field reviews and reports, and progress draw certification.
  • Contract Management and managing work relative to the agreed scope with the client, ensuring changes to design scope are addressed prior to proceeding with the work, and understanding the impact of scope changes on the overall project development and timeline.
Qualifications & Education Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited 4-year institution.
  • Understanding of the construction industry specific to mechanical building systems and a desire to perform design engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience  (HVAC system design, plumbing design, fire protection design, knowledge of relevant Codes and Standards and available technologies).
  • Ability to understand project scope and complete deliverables with proper quality control practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong computer skills including an understanding of data analytics.
  • Experience with 2D and 3D design tools (AutoCAD/Revit) would be considered an asset.
  • Bilingual (French/English) would be considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, and a demonstrated capability for analysis, problem-solving and strategic thinking.
